For the record, Nerve Net was not Brian Eno's first attempt at rock & roll. Not counting his time with Roxy Music, he also made several solo albums in the 1970s that were clearly intended as approaches to pop music -- they were sideways approaches, of course, shaped by the intellectual distance he has always kept between himself and the music that arises from the forces that he puts into motion, and they were far from unqualified successes. But this is his most rocking solo album in years, and also his funkiest.

After the breakup of Mazzy Star, vocalist Hope Sandoval joined with Colm O'Ciosoig (formerly of My Bloody Valentine) to form Hope Sandoval & the Warm Inventions. The project retained the laid-back, slowcore sound of Mazzy Star, and much like Mazzy Star, featured Sandoval's sensuous, hypnotic voice. However, it replaced the psychedelic leanings that Mazzy Star was known for with spare, subtle arrangements that reinforced Sandoval's gentle vocal style. <AMG>

Neko Case looks formidable on the cover of Middle Cyclone, brandishing a sword in one hand while crouching low on the hood of a muscle car. It's mostly camp, of course -- the sort of superwoman image that Quentin Tarantino might have used for Death Proof's ad campaign -- but it also draws contrast with Case's past albums, two of which featured moody shots of the songwriter sprawled on the floor, ostensibly knocked out. Middle Cyclone isn't the polar opposite of Blacklisted's downcast Americana; there are still moments of heartbreak on this release, and Case channels the sad cowgirl blues with all the nuance of Patsy Cline. Multiple years in the New Pornographers' lineup have brightened her outlook, though, and Middle Cyclone balances its melancholia with some of the most pop-influenced choruses of Case's career. <AMG>

Ever the iconoclast, if there is one thing that Brian Eno has done with any degree of consistency throughout his varied career, it is presenting his art in an array of perpetually "out of the box" forums. All that changed -- in a manner of speaking -- with the release of two companion multi-disc compilations. Eno Box I: Instrumentals (1994) condenses his wordless creations, while Eno Box II: Vocals (1993) does the same for the rest of his major works on a similarly sized volume. Interestingly -- and in his typically contrary fashion -- this initial installment was actually issued last. Each of Eno Box I: Instrumentals' three CDs respectively concentrates on a specific facet of the artist's copious back catalog.

At the time of this early-'90s box set, Brian Eno's career had taken some fascinating sonic twists and turns. The triple-disc Eno Box II: Vocals (1993) provides an overview of the artist's solo work as a singer. Similar to its instrumental companion, Eno Box I: Instrumentals (1994), the purpose of this compilation is to provide an apt overview of Eno's sizable back catalog. One of the perhaps unintentional consequences -- especially for those familiar with the original projects -- is a freshness when hearing the contents in a new context, not to mention significantly upgraded audio thanks to the super-bit mapping digital remastering process. In addition to excerpting key performances strictly from his solo long-players, there are several otherwise difficult to locate single-only sides, collaborations, and even a handful of tunes from his (then) unissued project My Squelchy Life (1993), as well as a few other surprises.

Coma is a Polish alternative rock band, founded in 1998 in d by Dominik Witczak (guitar) and Tomasz Stasiak (drums). The name - Coma - was chosen accidentally. They tossed a coin to decide because they had an appointment for an interview in Radio d. After winning the Rock Festival in Wgorzewo the band became very popular in Poland.
