The Easy Star All-Stars have taken the same magic that rendered "Dub Side of the Moon" a phenomenon and applied it to another of the twentieth century's greatest recordings: "OK Computer." Most tributes phonographically copy the original band or fall embarrassingly short in the attempt. Both types are dull. A good tribute pays homage to the parent while simultaneously making a fresh interpretation. "Radiodread" accomplishes this goal in a meaningful way. The primary genre here is roots reggae with tones of dub, ska, rock and soul.

The original version of this film soundtrack is the single most influential reggae album in the genre's history, and the most listenable reggae record from beginning to end. That's always been a bit surprising, given that the film's director selected the tracks in a harried weekend of picking-and-choosing among songs that struck a personal resonance. It's doubly amazing that the songs fit the film so perfectly, and that Chris Blackwell was able to weave the tracks from various artists into such a perfect, cohesive album. This is the essential introduction to reggae music, and a collection whose spirit and musicality simply never ceases to amaze.

Strangely enough, none of the tracks here appear on the greatest hits cd, Legend, although many are worthy. This cd has never left my 5 disc cd changer since I've owned it. The band features 2 new guitarists (Donald Kinsey from Peter Tosh's Band, and Earl "Chinna" Smith a legendary Jamaican guitarist) and the guitar work is fantastic.

A respected jazz guitarist, Ernest Ranglin is one of the foundation musicians for Jamaican ska and reggae, and his contributions at the legendary Studio One have earned him the right to cross genres at will. This collection is a reissue and remix of his 1977 album Ranglin Roots, with added tracks that more than double the length of the original release without breaking or shifting its tone.

This is by far one of the greatest modern reggae albums out there. Named after a particular area in Kingston, Jamaica where all major roads meet, Damian "Jr.Gong" Marley sampled a variety of musical genres while collaborating with many big time reggae, dancehall & hiphop artists.

Tiken Jah Fakoly is an extremely talented reggae musician from Ivory Coast. He sings in French and English, possibly other languages, and has an outstanding band to back him up with a solid reggae groove. His music sends a message of strength, equality, peace and love.
