“In 1987, Steve Roach conceptualized an album of ambient music based on the deserts of the American Southwest. He and project producer Chuck Oken recruited two more of California's top synthesists, Kevin Braheny and Richard Burmer. Together they created Western Spaces. This is where desert ambience began. Over the years, Roach has perfected the style and has become its leading progenitor. And this CD has influenced a decade of synthesists. This trio, working individually and collectively, created the prototype. Even after some alterations, this is still the CD that defines the roots of the style. CD was reissued later in 1987 on Fortuna with Thom Brennan and new tracks replacing Burmer and his tracks.

Despite a delayed UK release for his 1987 evocation in music of Southern California's Mojave Desert, Steve Roach and Braheney's work sounds surprisingly contemporary. Given electronic music's rapid development in recent years, that's an indication of how far they were ahead of the mainstream. This was the first album in perhaps a decade to turn away from the long-established synthesizer conventions (space, mental travelling, fantasy, legend) and look for inspiration, as Brian Eno once did, to the land. As a result, Roach and Braheney were obliged to find new tonal colours and slowly unfolding rhythmic patterns which would reflect the desert's subtle interplay of heat and light, and the disturbing sense of distance in a landscape which seems unchanging but which is, in fact, always moving, eroding and renewing itself. Easily among the finest electronic albums of the last decade.

The awe and picturesque environs of the Southwest have long provided inspiration to writers and painters – what better way to bring out the desolation, expansiveness and metaphors of the region than via state-of-the-art electronics? Roach, of course, was already investigating the means whereby organica becomes electronica on the classic DREAMTIME RETURN set. Together with fellow synthesist Braheny, Roach again uses his amazing conceptual acumen to bring out the desert's unrevealed secrets. Listening to "In the Heat of Venus," you can also see the heathaze wafting through the air and circling the mountain's edges, sinuously weaving to a spell woven with kalimbas, woodblock percussion and synthesizers whose sounds are burned amber-red. "Desert Walkabout" embraces a more elegaic, serene, almost classical sensibility, shot through with Braheny's ghostly electronic wind instrument caterwauls, mock-harp spicing, delicate percussives and Roach's lonesome synth chords. Check your compass at the door and melt into the horizon.		”
