DARKEST BEFORE DAWN just might be the best Steve Roach disc ever. Such praise would have to place it near (or at) the top of the list of best e-music CD's ever, given Steve's status as the best e-music artist ever (IMHO). He has become, quite simply, the quintessential electronician. Steve has demonstrated the ability to thrive in many different e-music styles. His recent impact, until now, has been in the electro-tribal and desert ambient realms. (Indeed, he is the "inventor" of desert ambience.) Steve's landmark and milestone releases in those styles have redefined the way that many e-music devotees listen to music. This wonderful CD serves as a reminder to his fans that he is also a master minimalist. There are a couple of handfuls of phenomenal e-musicians creating absolutely stunning dark, even satanic, ambient atmospheres. This disc is just as scary and just as dark as any of them, and it is deeper than the deepest. Steve accomplishes all of this without crossing into the realm of satanic soundscapes. His deep drones serve as the bases for his voluminous atmospheres. He strings them together into one 74 minute soundworld. In the realms of reality, this CD has no meaning and no foothold. Listeners willing to think "outside the box" will be able to determine something. Only those listeners willing and able to "think above the box" will begin to grasp the concepts and depths of Steve Roach's dynamic soundworlds. This takes the listener (and reader) full circle. The reviews of this "triple pak" began with Steve at a different level of Zen consciousness. Along the way there has been mention of the depths and heights of these adventures. The reviews end with Steve still out there, a real human being with a sense of perception that exceeds all possible explanations.

Considering the great rhythmic activity of recent works like TRANCE SPIRITS and CORE, this single ethereal track may come as a surprise. But then again, one should always expect the unexpected from an undisputed master of the genre, who manages to continually evolve and rarely sit still musically. Though DARKEST BEFORE DAWN does hearken back to similar long-form works like THE DREAM CIRCLE and discs one and three of ASCENSION OF SHADOWS, it also borrows just a touch from the deep crevasses of THE MAGNIFICENT VOID. Steve combines these and other influences into something familiar yet fresh. For those who don't "get" American ambient music, who think it just doesn't do anything, well this will prove that to you, I suppose. But for those who relish the deep dark echoes, the wondrous subtleties and layers, both real and imagined, this is the purest nectar of the gods. As is often the case with minimal ambient works, describing this beauty on paper proves difficult. It is soft and slow, revolving and yet evolving, seemingly as minimal as the black cover art, but showing hints of other elements taking form, not unlike the brown low horizon emerging from the inside booklet into the blackness. It is a perfect picture of the music, subtle shadings of sound rising up out of the depths, ever so gently. Like other great ambient pieces, this works equally well for playing softly in the background, or loudly while listening with great attention and clarity of focus. This is easily my choice for the best floating ambient release of 2002.

As you might suspect, this music is excruciatingly minimal, consisting of ascendant drones that coalesce to convey an utter darkness that transforms -- ever so gradually -- into a somber sunrise of harmonic textures. Here, Roach returns to his sparse but evocative style that mirrors near-indistinction. Tenuous threads of tonality drift with eternal sustain, seemingly unvarying while actually the drone is in a state of constant flux, mutating with such indolence that its progression becomes subliminal, reacting primarily on the listener's subconscious. The substance of the harmonic flow is ethereal and haunting. It comes in subtle waves, like a vaporous surf that you cannot see or feel, but whose resonance stirs your soul with its feathery caress. Imagine if you took away all the sounds of civilization, stilled the chittering of insects and silenced every nocturnal creature, even stopped the wind. If you listened very hard, the night would still have a sound... and this music is a remarkable approximation of that dark sigh. Roach has superbly captured that dimensionless presence. This music exactingly mimics that timeless state with its relentless serenity.
