Steve Roach - World's Edge (1992)
EAC | FLAC (Tracks) + LOG + CUE | 516 MB | MP3 320 CBR | 320 MB | Artwork
Tribal, Ambient | Label: Fortuna Records | Catalog Number: 18057-2

WORLD'S EDGE is both a culmination of styles and a brave step forward for Roach. On disc one of this two-disc set, he continues to mine and explore the tableau of soundscapes he first unearthed on DREAMTIME RETURN, WESTERN SPACES, and DESERT SOLITAIRE. With its cavernous chords echoing the lonely mesas and sprawling tundras of the American southwest, WORLD'S EDGE captures the senses via a broad array of electronic timbres and thunderclaps of percussion. This is music of sensual and surreal power, a stimulating, provocative immersion into the canyons of the psyche. Roach flavors his sweeping electronic panoramas with didjeridu, an assortment of frame drums, rainsticks and other indigenous native intruments. On "Thunderground," swells of electronic waves ebb while massive enclaves of drumbeats build towards an explosive climax. After recovering from this wringing of the senses, disc two's one epic piece, "To the Threshold of Silence" links Roach's pre-ambient stylings with his fourth world musings into a subtly altering, galvanizing work. Awesome.

Robert Rich & Steve Roach - Soma (1992)
EAC | FLAC (Tracks) + LOG + CUE | 282 MB | MP3 320 CBR | 146 MB | Artwork
Tribal, Ambient | Label: Hearts Of Space | Catalog Number: HS11033

On the CD insert, 'soma' is defined as a drink which could help one achieve empathy with the gods. SOMA, the musical document, might be that missing link between earth and the heavens. While STRATA, the first collaboration between Steve Roach and Robert Rich, sought to peel away the substratum layers of the inner consciousness, SOMA attempts to reconcile those emotions with the outer world through a wondrous, gripping corpus of sound. Utilizing a great assortment of synths, samplers, didgeridus, clay pots, rainsticks, rocks, ceramics, talking drums, guitars, flutes and programmed drums, Roach and Rich perform a stunning series of lively, aural mosaics that are like musical puzzle boxes with hundreds of oddly colored pieces.

Steve Roach - Artifacts (1994)
EAC | FLAC (Tracks) + LOG + CUE | 423 MB | MP3 320 CBR | 257 MB | HQ Artwork
Tribal, Ambient | Label: Fortuna Records | Catalog Number: 17082-2

Steve Roach once again pushes the boundries of musical expression on Artifacts. After 15 years and 24 solo and group releases, Roach continues to defy current musical trends with his progressive electronic, new age, world, techno-tribal, and ambient blend. This new release explores his growing ability with instruments such as didgeridoos, framedrums, dumbek, rainsticks, ocarina, and clay flutes and displays a level of electronic artistry that is approaching legendary. Textured rhythms create a unique, trance-like quality that sounds equally primal and futuristic.

Steve Roach - Origins (1993)
EAC | FLAC (Tracks) + LOG + CUE | 414 MB | MP3 320 CBR | 224 MB | HQ Artwork
Tribal, Ambient | Label: Fortuna Records | Catalog Number: 17081-2

Steve Roach has an impressive body of recordings; however, Origins may be his most striking release to date. Continually intrigued by Aboriginal culture and music, its influence can be heard on this release...Driven by hybrid percussion, synthesized melodies, gravel-voiced chants and didgeridoo, Origins brings our most elusive dreams and primeval memories into focus through potent sonic essays. "Clay, Wood, Bone, Dirt" is a stunning acoustic duo featuring Roach and Jorge Reyes, who plays clay water pots on this selection. Suso Saiz provides his own brand of hypnotic guitar textures on several selections as well.

Steve Roach / Kevin Braheny / Michael Stearns - Desert Solitaire (1989)
EAC | FLAC (Tracks) + LOG + CUE | 297 MB | MP3 320 CBR | 167 MB | Artwork
Ambient | Label: Fortuna Records | Catalog Number: 17070-2

The follow-up to WESTERN SPACES, this time with Michael Stearns. The intensity of the desert's elemental power and allure are brought into focus on this collection of evocative sound paintings. Intense heat and thunder storms, craggy desert mountains, vast labyrinth-like canyons are at the center of this remarkable portrait of the American Southwest, one that the late writer Ed Abby wrote about so potently in the book Desert Solitaire from which the title was borrowed.

Steve Roach - Darkest Before Dawn (2002)
EAC | FLAC (Tracks) + LOG + CUE | 329 MB | MP3 320 CBR | 188 MB | Artwork
Dark Ambient, Minimal | Label: Timeroom Editions | Catalog Number: TRE10

DARKEST BEFORE DAWN just might be the best Steve Roach disc ever. Such praise would have to place it near (or at) the top of the list of best e-music CD's ever, given Steve's status as the best e-music artist ever (IMHO). He has become, quite simply, the quintessential electronician. Steve has demonstrated the ability to thrive in many different e-music styles. His recent impact, until now, has been in the electro-tribal and desert ambient realms. (Indeed, he is the "inventor" of desert ambience.) Steve's landmark and milestone releases in those styles have redefined the way that many e-music devotees listen to music. This wonderful CD serves as a reminder to his fans that he is also a master minimalist.

Steve Roach - Midnight Moon (2000)
EAC | FLAC (Tracks) + LOG + CUE | 326 MB | MP3 320 CBR | 189 MB | Artwork
Dark Ambient | Label: Projekt | Catalog Number: PROJEKT 99

Just when you thought Roach couldn't re-define the parameters of ambient music, there he goes again standing traditional mores on their head. Forsaking his trusty synthesizers and samplers, Roach turns his prodigious talents to the guitar on MIDNIGHT MOON, and you'll never look at six-strings the same again. The maven of myriad sonic monasteries deeply processes electric guitar, E-bow and fretless bass to such an extent their physiognomies are virtually indistinguishable from the constructions of synths, but the girth of pitch and tone only obtainable from things string-driven remains. This is a recording of voluminous lunar atmospheres and fetching supernatural motes arising out of curling arcs of sinuous sonic fog and swampy stereo gas.

Steve Roach / Kevin Braheny / Richard Burmer - Western Spaces (1987)
EAC | FLAC (Tracks) + LOG + CUE | 393 MB | MP3 320 CBR | 171 MB | Artwork
Ambient | Label: Innovative Communication | Catalog Number: ICCD 87.101

In 1987, Steve Roach conceptualized an album of ambient music based on the deserts of the American Southwest. He and project producer Chuck Oken recruited two more of California's top synthesists, Kevin Braheny and Richard Burmer. Together they created Western Spaces. This is where desert ambience began. Over the years, Roach has perfected the style and has become its leading progenitor. And this CD has influenced a decade of synthesists. This trio, working individually and collectively, created the prototype. Even after some alterations, this is still the CD that defines the roots of the style. CD was reissued later in 1987 on Fortuna with Thom Brennan and new tracks replacing Burmer and his tracks.
