The myths of the Norse come to life in composer Al Conti's new recording. Northern Seas is Conti's fourth album and contains eleven original New Age/World-fusion pieces that draw on ancient Norse mythology while weaving in modern sensibilities. As with his previous award-winning album, Scheherazade, Conti has taken well-known tales, this time from the mystical lands of the north that originated during Scandinavia's Viking Age, and woven music around themes and images. By combining ancient and exotic instruments (kantele, Jew's harp, hurdy gurdy, pump organ, accordion, and tribal drums) with modern ones (piano, violin, cello and both acoustic and electric guitar), Conti has created a mythical landscape that will carry the listener to another time and place, one cloaked in veils of mist when the gods ruled over harsh Nordic lands.

More a gathering of kindred spirits than a three-way collaboration, this evocative and fairly breathtaking recording holds its rightful place in fully bringing to virgin Western ears the sounds of Australia, specifically the time-bending timbres of the didjeridu and the ancient aboriginal spirit catcher, an sort of minimalist 'harp' that is whirled over the head and is said to "act as a receptor for unseen spirits." Judging by the otherworldly grooves of the didj and Roach's attendant cloak of synths, these earthsounds might in fact originate out of numerous lands before time. The opening "Red Dust and Sweat" flaunts nearly ten minutes of sublime digital dream over the vituperative grunts of Hudson and company's tree-hown soundpipes – it's difficult to resist the sensation that you've stepped back into the very bowels of the primordial soup from which we've all came, bringing back those 'first sounds' as evidence. On "Atmosphere for Dreaming," Roach and Hopkins set the participant off on clouds of delicate synths amid the fluttering of migrating moths, carrying the aboriginal signature on their wings. Listen first, and then remember if you had too much to dream last night...

The English language has not yet produced enough superlatives to describe INNERZONE, by Vidna Obmana and Steve Roach. "Fantastalacious" has a nice ring to it. "Fantastalacious" it is! This CD has many different influences and is a bit of a departure from Steve's and Vidna's norm. There are certainly traces of the electro-tribal ambience that their fans expect. And there is more! This disc has echoes of Steve's work with Vir Unis, Vidna's recent solo efforts, pure space minimalism, desert ambience and deep atmospheres. It is, quite simply, a diverse effort with something for everybody. And it has traces of the electronic music symphony that Steve has been constructing and developing for years. His signature wash and swoosh synth timbres give it away. Each note has its own depth and character. The synth riffs are smooth and stunning. There are no holes, no missing parts. From, note one to note last, this is pure electronic enjoyment. And it gets better with each listen!

ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS by Steve Roach was inspired and later compiled from several experiences in the concert setting, further proving the value of a gathering of listeners centered around a musical performance. ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS evolved out of Roach's travels and concerts in such diverse places as the beautiful hills of Tuscany and the urban setting of the studios where Star's End radio originates. ATMOSPHERIC CONDITIONS is one lengthy piece, moving slowly between four movements. The studious fan of subterranean soundworlds will find several reference points throughout this recording. After a stormy beginning, the clouds slowly part and we embark on a steady, subtle section of soft percussion and new rhythm patterns. The CD closes with a gentle track evocative of the reverent Deep Listenings weekend where the piece was recorded.
